music-centric tumblrs i actually follow & respect - pt. 1

busy two weeks comin up, followed by two weeks of putzing around Cambodia and Thailand.

naturally, expect a minimal amount of content here. in the meanwhile, here’s a few music-centric tumblrs (tumblrii?) i got mad respect for. there’s plenty excluded from this list, which was chosen rather arbitrarily, but i’ll cover ‘em in a follow-up.

in no order whatsoever:

• TUMBLKLAAT!
  • besides having one of the all-time-best tumblr names, dude’s been posting a steady stream of incredible beats, both classic unheard, for longer than i can remember. if you’re not down with a fairly broad—some would, naïvely, say contradictory—spectrum of beat genres, you’re gonna be filtering a lot.
• Dubstep Friday
  • ton of good shit every Friday. i started following him back when “dubstep wobblez!!!!” were still new and exciting to me. once a ton of nominal “producers” started recycling those sounds in the most uninspired manner possible and my ears began gravitating towards the new school of Dubstep, DSF gravitated the same way in complete synchronicity. if the word “Dubstep” brings nothing but bad connotations to mind: it’s both all-encompassing and meaningless nomenclature, and summarily, you’re listening to the wrong stuff.

  • there’s very few people i see so closely eye-to-eye with musically. she’s alarmingly fast at keeping up with new tunes, a trusted source for music discovery, and pretty damn talented to boot. no further justification needed.
• Sputnika’s World
  • mixed bag, like tumblrrhea, but more tightly focused. another one on my short eye-to-eye list (we’ve unintentionally posted the same tracks on a couple occasions) and maybe, although it seems impossible, carries as much love for James Blake as i do.
• Endless Retold
  • quality over quantity. i mean quality. brilliantly varied posts without disjoint; always expect the unexpected. you might know him better as Brian Simon, Anenon, or the Non Projects label head. complete digression: also a ridiculous source of exclusives/unreleased shit. seriously, every time i get a gchat beginning “you hear the new…” or “got something for ya,” i go half-mast before i finish reading the rest of it.
• BIG SPOON LIFESTYLE (AKA gravitydong)
  • i really fuckin wish i’d come up with that handle, it’s genius. mixed bag with a Hip-Hop + R&B bent. we’ve known each other a couple years, and it wasn’t until a week or two ago that i realized he ran a tumblr i’d been following for months. true story

as stated, i’ve left out a grip simply to avoid blowing my load in one go. plus, i’m fuckin tired of writing.
